Henry So

Unlike others, Henry’s first experience with cinematography and photography was as an actor at the age of eight, which required very early mornings and resulted in many sick days on the school’s record.  Within two years of acting part time, an artistic seed was planted and a passion began to gradually develop.

There are many similarities between cinematography and photography.  At the age of 12, Henry began to experiment with a 35mm cinema.  He developed a preference towards photography.  He found it to be more concise and expressive,

Henry loves to travel and explore the world, where much of his inspirations derive.  As soon as he could afford it, he upgraded from his 35mm to his first digital camera and traveled all 50 states.  His most significant and memorable trips were a 2 week, 4500 mile drive from Boston to Los Angeles, and exploring Barrow, Alaska for aurora photo shooting where he wore 9 layers of clothing in temperatures of -40F.

Henry equally enjoys photographing weddings, and capturing images for special and memorable events.  During the event, Henry prefers waiting for that right moment rather than creating it.  He considers himself a seeker of truth and searches intently for those rare and intimate moments between loved ones.  He considers this search the driving force and passion behind his style of photograph.

It has been a gift and privilege to photograph weddings in various places and settings.  It continues to overwhelm him to be able to capture these intimate moments of a couple’s life.

For commercial photography, Henry has to create the moment to capture through working with models, wardrobe, location, hair, make up, and lighting.

Rowland Height’s photography stands out from the crowd with its unique ability to dramatize its subjects through a sophisticated and inventive use of lighting techniques.  Henry designs different light settings based on the environment and the story being portrayed.  The environment is assessed for compelling natural light and angles and used to illuminate the main subject.

Henry is passionate about creating albums that tell each story he encounters.  Capturing the essence of love in midst of each event.  As the Bible says “Love is patient, love is kind, it always protects always trusts and always perseveres, always hopes (Corinthians 13:4-7).”  Each project and each image captured allows Henry to explore these aspects of love.
